Car Stereo Speaker: Let Your Car Stereo Speak For Itself

February 24th, 2008

Even if you’re not a car audio connoisseur, it’s easy to be impressed with a car stereo speaker while looking around in an expo or convention. They’re the first thing you’ll probably notice, they come in different colors, shapes and sizes. Those big throbbing concaves blaring incredibly low bass lines or cool little tweeters whistling out seething treble sounds.

Car stereo speakers are interesting and very tempting to buy, especially the big loud ones. But big is not always the best. Each speaker has its own unique quality, intended use and price range. Some may also be better than others at certain things so it pays to investigate your type of car stereo amplifier or head unit before you finally decide on a car stereo speaker for your system. Here are some features to consider:

Car stereo speakers are not all the same size and wattage, and this can cause a problem once you try to hook it up in your car. Know the specs of your system. Sort this out ahead of time, it will save you a lot of hassle. You will be happier with your new acquisition if you can get to see it in action as soon as possible.

There are also a lot of car stereo amplifiers on the market, it pays to be aware of how the car stereo speaker you are considering compares to the others, and how compatible it is to your amplifier or the amplifier you’re planning to buy. Car stereo speakers and amplifiers go hand in hand. You’ll want the car stereo speakers you buy to be suitable for your automotive entertainment needs and not strain the system.

Style can be an important factor when choosing your special car stereo speakers. You’ll want the one you choose to fit in perfectly with your other all sorts of stereo speakers. If you’re planning to install something different, you have to take into consideration the modifications your going to have to make in order to accommodate your new car stereo speakers.

One of the biggest issues in buying a new type of car stereo speaker is suitability. How suitable your car stereo speakers are is probably the biggest issue. Don’t forget the reason you’re buying the type of car stereo amplifier in the first place, and ensure that the all sorts of stereo speakers you are looking at will do the job you need no matter what other fancy features they may offer.

Brand is an important consideration when you are shopping for a car stereo speaker. The fact is, one brand of type of car stereo amplifier may have a much better reputation than another, and for good reason. You be the judge. Do your research. Ask car audio enthusiasts. Read magazines and reviews. Do you want to take a chance on just any car stereo speakers, or go for the proven name brand?

Lastly, price is important even if you think it’s not. After all, would you want to pay more for your car stereo speakers only to find it cheaper the next day at a different store? Nobody likes that. When shopping for better car stereo speakers, it pays to check at least a couple of different stores, just to make sure you’re getting your car stereo speakers at the best price.

How to Clean in Hard-to-Reach Places

There is more to cleaning your car than just washing and waxing the outside of it. You need to clean the inside too. The easiest way to begin this is to remove your mats, wash them; and hang them to dry, while you vacuum the rest of the interior. Then youll want to wipe down the seats: if theyre leather, then the dashboard and the interior of the doors. Thats a good start, but what about all those hard to reach places? They get dirty too.

If you have a good industrial type vacuum cleaner, then buying a kit with small add on pieces would be very helpful. You can find these anywhere from your local hardware store to online detailing shops. They frequently include a narrow crevice tool, a couple of brushes and a few other wands. It the narrow crevice tool that will be most useful for cleaning those tough to get at places.

Lets begin with the creases in the seats in your car. They collect lots of dirt and so need regular cleaning, but because of the way many seats are made, these creases are hard to get into. Youll be surprised when you push them apart to find how much dirt collects inside. This will also hold true if you have a childs car seat in your car. Youll be shocked at the bits of food, along with dirt, that collect in the creases of those seats. Your narrow mini crevice tool will vacuum it all out.

Your radio is also a place that gets dirty. Sticky or sweaty fingers can put layers of filth on radio buttons or knobs. You must be careful when cleaning this, so you dont short out the radio. Unhinge the faceplate and use a soft cloth to clean the buttons, and the face of the radio. Dirt in there can cause static and poor reception.

What about those map pockets on the back of the drivers and passengers seats? Have you ever looked inside them to see what collects in there? These need to be vacuumed out regularly as well. As do those hard to reach places under the seats. Make sure you have a hose long enough to get all the dust the will have collected under there.

Depending what you toss into your glove compartment, a good wipe through wouldnt hurt. This can be difficult depending on the size and shape of your glove box, but a damp cloth should be all it needs to clean up easily.

Your trunk will also have some hard to reach spots. If your spare tire sits in a depression you should remove it and vacuum under there as well. Then clean up the whole trunk, getting those hard to reach corners and along the edges. People use their trunks to carry everything in, including groceries; you want this area to be clean. Any little spots you cant get that need to be washed can be done with an old toothbrush. Between that and a crevice tool you should be able to reach all those difficult places and keep you vehicle clean.

Purchasing New Rims

Nearly any car made by any manufacturer can greatly benefit from a great set of new rims. Wheels are a great way to make your car look exactly how you want it to without having to purchase any overpriced body kits which can damage your car or void its warranty. Furthermore, a high quality set of rims can definitely make your car stand out in a crowd. One of the other great benefits that a set of rims can provide you with is that there are so many different styles to choose from that there is definitely a set that will be sized perfectly to what can fit on your car and will come in a style which you will undoubtedly find attractive.

One of the only major drawbacks with a set of rims is that they are a somewhat significant investment and you cannot be completely sure how good they will look on your car until they are already bought, paid for, and installed. With prices skyrocketing to as much as several thousand dollars per wheel, a wheel purchasing decision could definitely be made much easier if you had some way to test out what the wheels look like on your car before you shell out all of that cash for them.

While you could pop in a copy of Gran Turismo or Need for Speed: Underground for Playstation 2, find your car in one of their vast databases of automobiles, and then play around with the multitude of different wheel choices offered by each game title, this takes a ton of time and may not represent how the wheels would actually look on your car when all is said and done.

Since there was no other really great way to go about finding the perfect wheel, several wheel manufacturers and distributors decided to create a program for the computer that allows you to take a stock photo of a car and automatically change the wheels on it. This gives you that great benefit of being able to (relatively accurately) gauge whether or not a set of rims will work for your car.

After all is said and done and you have tested out a variety of wheel choices on your car via a virtual wheel purchasing program, it is time to set out to find that perfect wheel that you have been dreaming of. Unfortunately, most stores do not offer the vast selection of different rims which you might want to purchase, meaning that you would have to settle for something less than what you actually wanted. Luckily enough, the Internet has changed the whole rim-ordering process as well and now allows you to order your product through a variety of online retailers which can either ship the rims right to your door or to your favorite automotive garage for less than you might think.

General Tips for Car Care and Maintenance

For most of us, a car is a one of the biggest outlays we make. Obviously, we want to ensure we get the most for our money. Making sure we properly maintain and care for the car is one way to minimise the loss on our investment. Here are a few ideas to keep your vehicle running and looking like new.

Firstly, keep those fluids fresh and replace all filters regularly, and at the manufacturers recommended intervals. It doesn’t matter if the car still sounds fine. When you decide to leave that oil change for too long after the time recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, you are basically saying you dom’t care about sludge buildup or the eventual decreased efficiency that will inevitably occur. Filters which are overly clogged with gunk fail to protect your engine further and do nothing but add to the problem. Maintain a schedule with all your fluid replacement.

If you decide to replace the oil yourself, be sure to use the correct viscosity (grade) of oil, and don’t go down to the local motorist store and buy a brand you never heard of, just because it costs less. You WILL get what you pay for. Choose a grade that meets or exceeds the standards for your engine and don’t sweat the extra expense, it will save you money long term.

Every engine needs a regular schedule tune-ups. Just as with the fluid changes, arrange a schedule and stick to it. Because there is some variance in precisely what constitutes a tune-up, get your mechanic to tell you exactly what will be done to the car. Compare it with other reputable garages around town. You might discover that you can obtain a more complete service done elsewhere and for almost the same cost.

Don’t neglect inspecting the battery regularly too. Pay close attention to the state of the cables and terminals. Make sure they fit tightly and correctly and that they remain free of any form of corrosion. As for the battery itself, check the electrolyte (water) level and examine the battery from time to time to make sure there are no bulges or cracks in the battery casing.

Moving away from the engine, make sure you check the tyres. Examine them for any uneven tread wear, or bulging of the side wall, and watch out for cracking of the rubber if the vehicle stands idle for long periods. Uneven tyre wear is a sure sign you need the tyres balanced, and possibly aligned. Make sure to keep them properly inflated to the correct pressure. Poorly inflated tyres not only lower your mileage per gallon, but also increase the rate of wear on the tyres themselves.

Your windscreen wipers are one item you probably give no thought to until you need to use them. Even if rain falls for just two days each year where you live, inspect the wipers regularly. Make sure the blade is not worn or dried out. Wiper blades that are badly worn or breaking up are a great way to add streaks to your windscreen. In addition, they can break at the most inopportune time.

At least once a month, check the radiator coolant level. Running the engine without the correct level may not immediately translate into a smoking mess by the roadside, but you will be doing permanent damage to both the radiator and the engine. Make sure the mixture of water to coolant is within manufacturer specifications. One tip about checking the radiator: ensure the engine is completely cool before you remove the radiator pressure cap. Hot fluid and skin is not a good match unless pain is your thing.

Lastly, don’t neglect your brakes. Have the shoes or pads inspected regularly, as well as the brakedrums or discs. If you discover that your car has started to make any kind of unusual noises when you apply the brakes, never shrug it off. Take it to a mechanic immediately.

Cars are almost a necessity in today’s world. Make sure your main mode of transportation remains in tip top condition. You’ll be glad you did.

Rust Proof Your Car

Are you passionate about your hot wheels? Are you a car nut? Do you want your vehicles to have the just left the showroom-gleam even following years of motoring? Dampness, humidity and pollution – these are the worst dangers to your cars bodywork. To prevent rust and corrosion to your cars, you need to take regular care of your pride and joy. You need to rustproof your cars for safety, longevity and resale value purposes.

Corrosion: How it begins -

You have to know how rust starts and what are the parts of a vehicle which are mainly affected by rust. When being driven, your car encounters numerous pebbles and stones on the road. The smaller pebbles expose bare metal and will cause eventual corrosion. If the damaged area remains untreated the bare metal will oxidize, starting a chemical reaction and rust will form quite quickly. Over time it will start affecting your car. To search for rust inspect the places where the tyres throw up stones that chip the paint or undercoating. The most affected places are therefore areas around the wheels ie. the wheelarches and areas around the tyres.

How to stop Rusting:

Proper maintenance and regular care are the best ways to keep rust at bay. Check if any of your car’s bodywork is showing bare metal which is exposed to the elements as that’s what causes rust. If you find any exposed areas, immediately use a dab of touch-up paint. Keep your car away from moisture as much as you are able to. Try to clean the underneath of your car. Keep the underneath of your car clean during winter to wash away the salts which are used to de-ice the roads. Sometimes rust may occur beneath your car’s carpets and upholstery if it gets salty water during winter. So use a quality carpet or upholstery cleaner to remove the salt from carpet fibers. If rust has already started in your car prior to using rust proof you must remove the existing rust. Car manufacturers these days use zinc electroplating on the chassis. Zinc plating is very helpful in preventing rust. Rust proofing can be achieved by oil spray, Armour plate, leather protection, upholstery guard and also by using a good exterior car wash and shampoo.

As well as protecting a car body from rust, rust proofing also protects the electrical connections keeping them free from moisture, and it helps in keeping the brake system, and barke pipework in proper corrosion free condition. A rustproofing product is applied as a spray at a very high pressure that pushes out the existing moisture and puts in place a barrier which protects the surface of the car. There are a multitude of ways to prevent corrosion on your car. Zero rust performance is a well used method where a metal phenolic called “Zero Rust” is used which helps prevent corrosion and works as a rust proofing coating for your car. The zero rust proofing is effective and it offers benefits over all other rust proofing rust protection systems. Rust proofing can also be done by electronic corrosion protection. The name of the technique is cathodic protection and it is a common method to prevent corrosion and it is even used on ships. Cathodic protection works because corrosion is an electrochemical reaction, where the metal of the car forms one pole of a battery, and the salty moisture forms the electrolyte. By putting a negative charge on the bodywork the effect is cancelled out, thus preventing rust.

As in all things automotive, your cars manufacturer or dealer, or another qualified profesional should be able to advise you on the appropriate rust proofing for your car. Always seek professional advice before applying any kind of rustproofing and take the appropriate safety precautions as advised by the rust proofing products manufacturer. Used correctly, the right rustproofing method for your car will extend its life for many years. So you can carry on motoring in your pride and joy in rust free safety and comfort.

In Car Entertainment Installation Tips

When we talk about the car radio, we see that it has become a generic term to explain whatever ICE system we have in our vehicles. The car radio is known to be an item most upgraded, changed, or enhanced. People can get pretty carried away with their vehicle sound systems. These can be installed at any one of the car audio places, where there are professionals who know what they are doing, and do this on a daily basis can install your in car entertainment system with ease. Or, you can fit it yourself.

If you have the right handtools and equipment, can follow instructions, and are patient, this installation should only take a couple of hours. This is, obviously, based on your technical skills, the car you’re working on, and how difficult the installation is. Before you begin, put a drop cloth or plastic sheet beneath the area you are working in to protect the cars interior and catch any debris which falls.

Your new in car entertainment unit will be supplied with an installation kit. This should include all the instructions, and mounting hardware required to replace your existing car stereo with the new one that you just purchased. Often, the new system is a different size than the one that came with the car, but this is something that is compensated for by brackets and trim that should be included in the installation kit to mount the stereo in the dashboard while also making it appear that it fits.

Remember that an poorly done installation can damage both the vehicle and the in car entertainment equipment to the point where making a significant wiring error can cause the airbags to activate. This could cause injury. Also, be careful working inside the dashboard. This area can have sharp or jagged edges and cause you to cut yourself severely.

The wiring will come in a bundle called a harness. There will be the radio wiring harness and the vehicle wiring loom. These two must connect properly, and correctly and they may use a universal plug or adapter to do so. You’ll also wish to connect your new stereo to the aerial to get all the radio stations and improve the quality of the sound. You may need an adapter for this, as the two parts will possibly have different connecting plugs.

When you start, and have removed your old stereo head unit, be sure to retain it and all the parts that you took out with it. If the radio was only swapped because you desired a higher specified model, if you keep all the pieces with the old one, you can either sell it or fit it back in when you sell your vehicle.

One of the big cautions when fitting a in car entertainment equipment yourself is the potential of damage that can occur to the dashboard if you don’t take the necessary care. When attempting to take out the old stereo, especially using power tools if you have them, you must take special care not to try and pull anything out just on the assumption that you must have found all the screws. If the radio doesn’t come out easily, look again for hidden screws or clasps. You don’t want to crack the dashboard.

By taking a little extra time and care when installing in car entertainment systems you can save a lot of expensive repair work later. Check everything thoroughly before removing the existing equipment, and double check that all connections are correct before switching on the power after installing the new system. Follow these safety tips when installing your in car entertainment system, and you should be enjoying the sounds of your efforts for years to come.

An Overview of Air Fresheners

Some days, we want to get in our cars and drive. When we do this, it helps if the aroma within the car is something that we find relaxing and inviting. Two things help us accomplish this goal. First, we make sure to keep the interior clean. Second, we invest in a good quality care air freshener.

Most of us are familiar with those pine scented tree shaped air fresheners that we can hang from the rear view mirror. But how many people know that you can actually get all sorts of different types of hanging paper air fresheners? They come in all sorts of shapes and with a wide array of scents. Some examples are fruit-shaped fresheners, cartoon characters, sports equipment, and even celebrity faces. Imagine your favorite movie star grinning at you each time you step into your car!

Paper air fresheners do not tend to last for more than a couple of months at best, so be prepared to replace them fairly often. Fortunately, they do not tend to be very expensive. Plus you have the opportunity to try a new scent for awhile, without having a lot of money tied up in keeping the car smelling nice.

Moving up a step from the paper air fresheners are the clip on types. Just as you have the solid air fresheners that you can stick in a discreet spot in your home, these clip on types can be attached in an out of the way spot in the car and will provide the scent without the visual aid of something swinging from your rear view mirror. These clip types also are refillable, which makes it easy to change out from time to time.

You can also purchase fresh gel air fresheners that can be placed under the front seats of your vehicles. Just make sure you do not place them near anything that would interfere with the tracks that allow the seat to move back and forth. The gels can last for several months, so if you are looking for a relatively long term solution, this might be your best bet. While the choices in scents are not as prolific as with the clips or the paper air fresheners, there is still plenty to choose from.

Regardless of what form of car air freshener works best for you, the range of scents is so broad today that you are sure to find several that will please you. A quick scan of the Internet will yield information on such trendy items to hang form the mirror as “Flaming Scents,” “National Pride,” and Merlin the Magician.” The scents range from the fairly ordinary, such as cherry, lemon or musk to the much more exotic, like home baked apple pie or Christmas cookie. If you want to make old things smell young again, you can even go for a new car scent or the rich aroma of leather. There are all sorts of blends as well, reflecting mixtures of different herbs and spices. If you’ve ever burned incense or lit a scented candle, chances are you can find that same fragrance in a car air freshener.

One great thing about air fresheners is that chances are there are one or more scents that you find invigorating. Certainly, anything that helps you to be more aware and alert while you are driving could be considered a good investment.

A Comparison of Oil Changes Changing your oil regularly is a crucial part of maintaining the health and welfare of your car.

July 6th, 2006

A Comparison of Oil Changes

Changing your oil regularly is a crucial part of maintaining the health and welfare of your car. If you neglect proper oil changing, then the car will die. Plain and simple. Oil should be changed at around three-thousand miles or every three months. Some cars may be able to work on the same oil for five-thousand miles, but beyond that, you are taking a risk when not changing oil.

You must consider a comparison between oil changes based on the type of driving and the relative driving conditions. This will allow you to accurately choose the proper amount of time that should pass between separate oil changes. And this is not a minor point. Proper care and maintenance of a car begins and ends with the condition of the engine. Conversely, the condition of the engine begins and ends with proper care and maintenance of the oil that is running through the engine.

Under the umbrella label of normal driving conditions, you can probably get away with not having to change the car’s oil as frequently as a car that is driving on more severe conditions. If the car’s driving conditions do not involve treacherous weather, stop and go traffic, speeds that are not excessively fast or slow, you might be able to squeeze a few more miles or weeks on top of the standard three-thousand/three-month moniker.

When driving in weather that is very cold or has freeway conditions similar to say, Los Angeles, a car will be under a great deal of stress. (Actually, all beings be they mechanical or organic are in a constant state of stress in Los Angeles). So, when one has to drive in these types of more stressful conditions, it would probably be wise to stick to the three thousand/three month module. Driving with oil that gets ‘dirty’ quicker and then continually driving on oil that is in this condition will eventually cause severe damage to the car’s engine. This is something you should avoid whenever possible.

Now, when it comes to comparing oil changes, one must compare the various shops that offer the oil change service. What is paramount to making a consumer comparison between these various shops requires understanding that the oil is not the only thing that needs to be changed. Transmission fluid, fuel injection, tire pressure, and even window washer fluid are generally included in the oil change process. And it goes without saying that proper inspection of the air filter is generally included.

So, how do the shops compare with one another? Do they perform all the required checks or do they miss items? And, on the flipside, do they recommend additional service or fluid changes that are not necessary?

These are just generalizations but they offer a decent guideline to the types of comparisons that need to be considered when making an oil change or deciding where to get one’s oil changed.

The last thing you will want to consider is the actual oil used. If you go to a place like Jiffy Lube, they will usually give you four or five possible oil change types. As you scale up in price, the viscosity of the oil increased, too, which means it will break down a lot slower and actually theoretically last longer (even though they will still tell you to come back in three months).
